Varying Image over Time

You hear a lot of talk about the value in developing a table image in poker, then using that image to exploit other players’ expectations of you by acting in opposition to that frame. There is certainly a credence to this question, and a great value of using smoke and mirrors to act under a shield of what your past dictates you will do.

There seems as well, though, a different and perhaps equal value in the pursuit of varying your image at the poker table over time, mixing up your play by modes that leave your opponents never knowing what to expect.

This kind of play is frequently attributed to the great Gus Hansen, who shifts modes so often, sometimes from hand to hand, that it is very difficult to assign what kind of nature he is in. This leaves the opponent in a position where the only way they can find out if they are judging you correctly is to put their money up at stake. If they always have to pay for your information, they will often then end up giving you money when you have the best hand. The randomizing factor seems to pay for itself in the spots where it catches you by maximizing the value of the gain when you win. Remember this when you play poker online.

Pocket Aces Smashed in the Bubble

Poker tournaments all have a “bubble” which most often refers to the last online poker player that goes out before making it into the money. In larger poker online tournaments though there can be several “bubble” points since a contest with over 100 players will most likely pay out to more than one final casino table. The World Series of Poker is the type of tournament with multiple bubble points. First, there is making it into the money when the field is down to 10 percent of the original entries. At the last few WSOPs, this occurred in the 600s with more than 6,000 contestants participating. The second bubble happens when it gets down to two tables and the players are battling to make it to the final nine. This year’s final table bubble was burst when the contest was down to ten players, and Jordan Smith was dealt pocket Aces. Naturally, he shoved all his chips in, hoping to chase everyone away and scoop up the blinds or at least narrow the field. He was called by Darvin Moon who held pocket 8s. Much to Smith’s dismay, an 8 appeared on the flop to smash the pocket Aces, which did not improve. Smith’s play was correct since at this stage of tournament, with a bubble about to burst, most players tighten up with the hope someone else will be eliminated. Smith just ran into bad luck, and Moon went on to be the chip leader in the November Nine.

Laying down Losers in Limit Poker

While playing Limit Texas Hold ‘Em, you’re holding pocket 8s, and the flop brings Ks-Qs-8d to complete your set. This is a terrific scenario for you, sitting in middle position. The big blind bets and you raise, putting your online poker opponent on a strong King or Queen. A tight player behind you re-raises. The big blind calls and so you do you.

Your hand still seems strong since it’s likely that your two online poker opponents are each holding a strong King and Queen. There is always the possibility that the tight player behind you who re-raised is holding pocket Kings or Queens too. But since neither player raised pre-flop, you think it’s unlikely either player holds a pair of faces. Either player could be on a flush draw two with a high face card. Most likely one is holding K-Q and the other A-K.

The turn brings a third spade card of low ranking. The Big Blind bets and you have to pause. The pot holds 15 bets at this point. Is your set still good against the flush possibility on board? Perhaps you were already drawing dead against a bigger set than your 8s. You painfully muck your flopped set.

The river is another spade, putting four to the flush out there. The big blind bets and the other remaining player calls. Big blind turns over Kd-Ks for the wining flush against the other player’s Ad-Qs.

You have regretfully donked off some of your chip stack, but in fact, have made the correct play and wise decision to fold. Don’t let these situations erode your confidence. Recognize that you got a bit lucky, then it turned on you and you made the right poker play.

Beating the Maniac

I play a regular poker online game where we have a few maniacal players, players who will raise ridiculous amounts with any two cards. It works fairly well, because they have a tendency to make some huge poker online pots, but on the other hand, maniacs have a tendency to push you out of hands that you may want to play. Some cards are worth a small raise to see the flop but not worth going all in for, especially because these guys are all but impossible to read. I used to lose patience with online poker maniacs fairly quickly. Sick of losing blinds and being forced out of hands that I could have won, I would start playing much more aggressively against them with cards that I had no right playing in the first place. Even when I made the right call, the maniac’s lousy hand would often be slightly better than my lousy hand. Eventually I learned that, like with most things in poker, patience is key. When you find yourself facing a maniacal player, just wait him out. There’s no need to try to bluff him out (he won’t fold, anyway)-eventually, he’ll start betting against you when you have a killer hand.

Roasting Hogs

The first meat that I ever wanted to cook on a barbecue was a chicken using the rotisserie and I’ve never really stopped to think about why. I think it’s down to “the boy with a new toy” mentality in that the BBQ spit came in the pack with the grill and a rotisserie cooking process adds dynamism. Looking back not only is it visually attractive but also the spit does the work for you leaving plenty time for a beer or two!Maybe I did one too many beers on that first cookout because the results weren’t quite up to standard. I attempted to light my grill with paper and wood which sent ash all over the chicken. I didn’t balance the chicken very well on the spit so one side cooked before the other. I made every error in the book.Having said that, getting that first taste of BBQ smoke was still a defining moment and even after my first poor attempt with the rotisserie I was (and still am) hooked on outdoor cooking.I eventually advanced to cooking big animals on larger barbeques; I found that entire lambs or whole hogs are my favorite. Roasting a hog shouldn’t seem scary; if you don’t want to do it yourself there are a number of businesses who can do it for you. After tasting pork cooked on a spit roast I don’t think I can ever return to cooking it in a conventional oven.

Short Handed vs Full Table Poker

A table is said to be seated ’short handed’ when its number of online poker players goes below full or nearly full seating, thus having less hands dealt per round, and less poker online hands available to compete to win the pot. The exact number of players to be considered as such tends to vary among players, but is often 6 or less in a table for ten.

As a result, when playing short handed, the value of individual hands is higher than when playing with a full poker table. Generally moderate hands, such as top pair or so on, are more likely to be good, since there are less hands ranked to play in cohesion with the flop, and the instances of possible hands making monsters is reduced.

In general then, it is necessary in short handed events to play more loosely than one would at a full ring. Players who do not vary from the selectively they adhere to at a table of ten are likely to find that their chips are eaten up by paying blinds and undervaluing hands that have a good chance of winning against the select group of players involved. Adding to the range of hands you are willing to raise and call with, and acting aggressively with those hands, is even more valuable, as in short handed games, even more so than in traditional poker, it is the strong who survive.

Multi-table Poker Tournaments

The mainstream success and widespread popularity of the World Series of Poker has exposed many new players to tournament online poker. As a result, both live and online tournaments are laden with so called “dead money” at every buy-in level, from beginner two dollar online sit and go tournaments to the full-fledged ten thousand dollar live events. As a result of this boom in popularity and massive increase in prize money and fields through which players must navigate in order to cash, a proliferation of tournament strategies have become available for the casual player to reference. By using the management and tournament survival strategies of the pros, casual players can find themselves in the driver’s seat to far more cashes and wins than they could have ever imagined.

As a casual player, the first fact of tournament play that should be realized is that running good is just as important as playing well. Obviously, you cannot control the way the cards fall, and the only thing you can take away from this reality is that your goal should be to get your chips in with the best hand, and don’t bother worrying about how lucky or unlucky you are. You can take solace in your defeats that you made the correct plays, and avoid being a results-oriented poker player.

Playing well involves many facets, including making correct lay downs and re-raises, as well as great reads and being cognizant of the image you maintain. As your growth as a player progresses, you will notice the things you do well, as well as the mistakes you make. Tournaments are far more conducive to tight, focused play, as the opportunity to re-buy as in a cash game rarely exists. Take your time on crucial decisions, and try your best to be focused and prepare for the long haul, as multi-table tournaments will always be exhaustingly long sessions of poker if you intend to go deep.

Multi-table poker tournament success is best realized over a large sample size. Even the most seasoned poker professionals allow themselves a large sample size by playing in many events every year. Making assumptions about poker winnings is not an intelligent rationalization, especially in tournaments where luck plays a much more central role than in a cash game. A good player is much more likely to show a higher average cash yield in five tournaments rather than letting it all ride on a single tournament. Allow for variance and play a large volume of tournaments, and you will accrue both experience and success in the long run.
