Be careful to check your application materials thoroughly before submitting them. When we did an analysis of the 650 resumes, we found a large number of errors. 63% of the applicants were easily eliminated with a fast triage process. How? The same way any HR professional would. By passing over resumes where the objective didn’t match our job. By passing over candidates whose cover letters gave us grounds not to engage them, like "I know I’m overqualified but I really need a job". By eliminating candidates whose documents that didn’t open properly. And by passing over job hunters who didn’t bother to spell check their cover letter and/or resume.
So the good news is that job boards give you a sense of what companies are hiring, and for what kinds of positions. But once those jobs are posted, the competition is intense. You can still compete, if you have a well honed resume, designed to appeal directly and clearly to the recruiter. And if you have practiced interviewing – so you don’t stumble at a critical point.
Another thing to be aware of is how quickly you can be checked on on the internet. As we Googled several candidates, we ran into some Facebook comments that were in questionable taste. Nothing illegal, but enough to rock our thoughts about who to choose.

TalkTalk and Citizens Online recently announced a search for Britain’s “unsung Digital Heroes”. The TalkTalk Digital Heroes Awards, as they are known, will honour and reward twelve persons, one from each of the twelve regions of the UK, for their contribution to social change through the use of digital technology.
The focus of the awards will be on how people have used technology to improve life in their local communities. The program has the blessings and support of Britain’s Digital Champion Martha Lane-Fox.
TalkTalk is putting up a grand prize of ₤10,000 for the winner and eleven prizes of ₤5,000 each as contributions toward their respective projects. In addition, each winner will get an 18-month free subscription to broadband, courtesy the sponsor.
Urging charities to nominate their digital heroes for the awards, the managing director of TalkTalk, Wendy Becker said that the awards would go a long way in acknowledging the tremendous work being done by individuals. It would also highlight the efforts being undertaken by groups as well as individuals to make Britain a better place to live. Six months ago the Financial Times reported that Deutsche Telekom was not prepared to endure any more failures that were associated with its daughter company, T-Mobile UK. Now an article in Sunday’s FT says that Vodafone is showing interest in taking over T-Mobile after it realized that Deutsche Telekom is willing to part with it. No claims have been made by any parties in either accepting or denying the rumours.
The rumours were set off last month when Deutsche Telekom pushed down the value of T-Mobile in its books and this was taken as a signal that it was planning to let go of the company. At that point of time, it was strongly believed that either 3 mobile or Orange would step up and make some moves for acquiring T-Mobile. However, it now appears that Vodafone is the strongest contender for the deal. If this acquisition does go through, Vodafone would become the strongest player in the mobile broadband market (click for info on Vodafone mobile broadband) by increasing its share from 25 per cent to 40 per cent. This could cause market regulators some concern, as their main aim is to maintain a healthy balance in the market by keeping it competitive. Therefore Ofcom will not let the deal go through easily, until it has satisfied itself that the competition in the market will not be harmed by the acquisition.

Launch of an innovative business broadband bundle, offering high-value services including calls to UK and international numbers, has been announced by BT. The bundle has been priced at £30 per month.
The announcement from BT broadband comes after the introduction of new its call packages, named BT One Plan. These packages start from a fixed monthly cost of £5, and offer calling minutes to landlines in the UK, calls to mobile phones in the UK, as well as an international calling facility. BT has been actively advertising its broadband service and has revealed important statistics on its service and support levels. According to the data, the broadband service under BT Business Broadband is quite reliable with less than 0.01% downtime.
